Alfriston is one of the finest villages in the South East — a beautifully preserved medieval village in the Cuckmere Valley in East Sussex, set within the South Downs National Park. The South Downs Way long-distance path passes through, and the Cuckmere river crossing here has been used since Saxon times.
St Andrew's Church — the 'Cathedral of the South Downs' — is a magnificent 14th-century flint church of extraordinary proportions for a village of this size. The adjacent Alfriston Clergy House, a thatched Wealden hall house dating from around 1350, was the National Trust's very first acquisition — purchased for just £10 in 1896. The Star Inn (1345), the village green and the Cuckmere water meadows complete a picture of almost perfect Sussex character.
