Pitlochry is one of Scotland's most celebrated Highland resort towns — a beautifully situated Victorian spa town in the heart of Perthshire, strung along the banks of the River Tummel amid some of the most dramatic scenery in Scotland. With a population of just 2,782, it is tiny but perfectly formed — a base for some of the finest walking, cycling and outdoor adventure in the Highlands, and the home of one of Scotland's most respected theatres.
Pitlochry was essentially created by the Victorian railway and the enthusiasm of Queen Victoria for Highland scenery. The arrival of the Highland Railway in 1863 transformed the settlement from a small village into a fashionable resort, and the town retains much of its Victorian character — the wide main street lined with independent shops, hotels and guest houses has an unhurried, prosperous quality quite different from most small Highland towns.
The Pitlochry Dam and Fish Ladder — built in 1950 to create the Loch Faskally reservoir — is one of the town's most extraordinary features: an observation chamber allows visitors to watch Atlantic salmon making their upstream migration through 34 pools. The Theatre in the Hills (Pitlochry Festival Theatre) is one of Scotland's finest repertory theatres, operating a different production each evening throughout the summer season — drawing audiences from across Scotland and beyond.
Pitlochry is the gateway to some of Scotland's most iconic landscapes — Killiecrankie gorge, Ben Vrackie (839m), the Pass of Killiecrankie and the Hermitage at Dunkeld are all within easy reach. House prices average £245,000.
