Prestatyn is one of the most pleasant and family-friendly seaside towns on the North Wales coast — a well-kept resort town in Denbighshire with a good sandy beach, an excellent range of independent shops and one uniquely famous distinction: it is the northern terminus of Offa's Dyke Path, the 177-mile national trail that follows the ancient earthwork from here to Chepstow on the English-Welsh border. Walkers completing the route traditionally dip their boots in the Irish Sea at Prestatyn's beach.
Prestatyn is notably tidier and more prosperous-feeling than its neighbour Rhyl — the town centre has a good range of shops and the seafront is well-maintained. The Nova Centre leisure complex and the long sandy beach are the main visitor draws. The town is also famous as the setting of Philip Larkin's poem Sunny Prestatyn — not the most flattering portrait, but certainly the most literary association of any North Wales seaside resort.
The Clwydian Range AONB rises directly behind the town — the hills are accessible on foot within 30 minutes of the seafront, giving superb walking with views over the Dee Estuary, the Wirral and on clear days, the Lake District. House prices average £185,000 — excellent value for a seaside town with its own mainline railway station.
